This tapestry rests upon the wall in the entryway of the leasing office of the apartment complex where I live. EVERY time I see this worn piece of cloth with some words written upon it, I stop. EVERY time I read these words. And EVERY time differing thoughts are stirred.
Of course I think about which “wolf” I am feeding. The reason I posted this is because I believe we all should be thinking very seriously about which “wolf” we are feeding. However, this week some new thoughts and questions entered my head.
- What “stories” am I telling the kids with whom I work?
- Which “wolf” do the kids actually “see?”
- Am I willing to just sit and be, present and attentive, as a grandpa sitting with his grandson might be for a few precious moments alone, but together?
- Maybe most importantly (at least to my mind), how is a story from such a different culture, a different time, created in a different environment with two very different characters SO RELEVANT to my life right now, right here, in America, Friday, November 13, 2020? And if THIS story has relevance, how many other stories from different cultures and different times with differing characters am I not aware of that also might help me to TRY and be a better person?
- And lastly, am I a “wolf” who is willing to listen to the lamb, the horse, the lion, ALL of God’s creatures, from the meekest to the mightiest, from the past, the present, and those who will shape the future?
I hope that I am.
