I work closely with many young people that have experienced A LOT of trauma in their young lives… some much more than others. I am fortunate enough to be reading the book, “The Body Keeps the Score” by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, with a student currently. Yesterday I read these words and they hit me very, very hard. “Rage that has nowhere to go is redirected against the self, in the form of depression, self-hatred, and self-destructive actions.” I could not agree with this statement more.
So many of us deal with a “rage” because of the sense of a lack of control in our own lives, but it is misdirected… aimed at our children or our spouses or our boss or coworkers or whomever… when in reality we are raging against the uncle who abused us when we were a child or the mother who neglected to hold us when we were crying or the priest…. or whomever.
So many of us feel a “rage.” So many of us feel it is unexplainable, unknowable, untraceable… it is just there. But it is NOT just THERE! There is an origin… a beginning… a cause… and in exploring that cause, that origin, the healing can begin… only then can the REAL, NECESSARY healing begin. It is my desire that each of us KNOW what it means to HEAL. TRULY, TRULY HEAL…
I’m going to look into that book.
I hope those with whom you work DO have the opportunity to experience a path of healing. ❤️
Such significant work can result from realizing powerful feelings like rage, and reflecting on those experiences and emotions, and accepting them can hopefully foster growth. Moving forward in any manner is huge, even if it’s just baby steps. Wishing you all well.
Betsy, I think it is so funny, but I also REALLY like, that we have our own private conversation on this platform. I actually looked at the stats yesterday and I was SO disappointed when I saw there was no message waiting for me… I thought my luck had run out. I don’t think I experienced rage, but I did feel an emptiness. Thank you for simply being consistent and a reliable friend. This is something I cherish and helps me deal with many things in my own life… including rage. Thank you.
Yeah…our own private conversation platform. That’s funny.
Your posts are something I look forward to all week. 😊 These past few weeks have been just a BIT busy with me starting school 😉, but finding out and reading about the topics you choose each week is interesting!
