Might As Well Enjoy It…

I work in a middle school… it is THE BEST! I love it, TRULY! But let’s be honest, sometimes it can be the worst as well. Middle school kids… are just middle school kids. They are loud and funny and energetic and chaotic and seem to like lots of drama in their lives. They are also honest. I mean… like REAL honest! Brutally honest! Like… MEAN honest (I always hope this is unintentional, but not always quite so certain).

I ride a motorcycle. Almost EVERY SINGLE DAY I walk into the middle school with my helmet, at least one student says something like this, “You ride a motorcycle? Wow! How cool! Aren’t you a little old to ride a motorcycle?” EVERY… SINGLE… TIME! Like… really? But the truth is… I AM a “little” old… and maybe… well…

The kids have gotten to my head! So much so the other day I was riding to school and asking myself, “Am I too old to ride a motorcycle?” And I came up with a DEFINITE answer! HECK NO!!! In a half century plus a few years, I have learned this… Life is a “ride” that you have been “gifted” (even on our WORST days, it truly is a gift to be a part of this world)… It is also a ride you are not able to “exit” until the VERY, VERY END… It is a ride with every single emotion and every single experience we could ever imagine… and then some! It is absolutely the BEST ride and the WORST ride ever created… and there is room for each of us.

Am I too old to ride a motorcycle… maybe! In the kids eyes, I might as well be a dinosaur, but this dinosaur is ABSOLUTELY going to continue riding a motorcycle! Riding a motorcycle gives me great joy… but riding MY motorcycle… words are not enough to capture the joy! I guess, most simply stated, if we are all on this “ride” no matter what, we might as well enjoy it, as much as is possible. Whether you ride a motorcycle, a bicycle, a tricycle, or maybe even a unicycle… whatever you ride… ENJOY!
