The Importance of Discussion…

Every Friday, I post something on Facebook and I post something on this blog. Sometimes they are the same post, and sometimes they differ. Today, they differ. They differ because this morning, as I was preparing my post on Facebook, my friend messaged me. The post I had prepared for Facebook was controversial (at least in my opinion… it dealt with ICE in Minnesota) and before I posted it, I asked for her opinion and thoughts.

We ended up texting back and forth for about an hour… and I ended up not posting THAT post on Facebook because of our conversation. Even though this friend and I do not agree on many things and have quite varied opinions and thoughts on a range of topics, we have tremendous respect and admiration for each other. That respect and admiration for each other as individuals allows discussion, conversation, and even disagreement to remain civil, calm, considerate, and EVEN BENEFICIAL!

This is how our conversation ended, the last text from my friend: “Always appreciate your perspective and dialogue. You are one of the few people actually willing to discuss things. Isn’t that crazy? It should be the norm not the exception.”

Yes, it should be the norm. It can be the norm, if we are willing…
